ACROSSnet
is a partnership between:
and our industry partners:
The ACROSSnet project leaders are Lyn Simpson
and Diego De Leo. The project has also benefited substantially
from the leadership of a third Chief Investigator, Peter Yellowlees,
who has recently taken up the position of Associate Director
at the Centre for Health and Technology, University of California.
Lyn Simpson is First Chief Investigator on
the ACROSSnet project. Lyn is the coordinator of the Service
Leadership and Innovation Research Program (formerly the Communication
Centre) at QUT. She has been a driving force in research evaluating
the impacts of communication technologies on rural and remote
communities, and in analysing the role of social capital in
rural community development and capacity building in communication
technology implementation. Lyn is recognised for her research
in the innovative use of online technologies to create new
connections between rural community members and key policy
and decision makers in government and industry. In collaboration
with others, she has pioneered the body of literature examining
Queensland rural and remote communities and communication
technology. She has authored or co-authored over 30 papers,
book chapters and research reports since 1995 and has been
an invited keynote speaker at many conferences in this area.
Diego De Leo is Second Chief Investigator
on ACROSSnet. Diego is Professor of Psychopathology &
Suicidology, and Director of the Australian Institute for
Suicide Research and Prevention, Griffith University. Over
the past decade, Diego has become a leading figure in the
fields of suicide prevention and psychogeriatrics, both nationally
and internationally. He has published extensively with over
60 papers and a multitude of international and national keynote
and conference presentations. Perhaps Diego’s most visible research was in 1990 when
he was Chief Investigator of the World Health Organisation
(WHO)/EURO Project on Quality of Life in the Elderly (LEIPAD
project). The LEIPAD instrument, which derived from the study,
is one of the best-known instruments in the area, widely adopted
at the international level. In 1992 Diego founded the first
Italian Suicide Research Centre at the University of Padua.
In 1997 he created and was appointed Director of the first
WHO Collaborating Centre for Training and Research in Suicide
Prevention in the world. He has since been elected President
of the International Association for Suicide Prevention and
is co-founder of the WHO/EURO Network for suicide Research
and Prevention.
Peter Yellowlees contributed significantly
to ACROSSnet until late 2003, when he took up the position
of Associate Director at the Centre for Health and Technology,
University of California. Previously, Peter was director of
the Centre for Online Health (COH) at the University of Queensland.
The establishment of the Centre was a direct outcome of his
groundbreaking work on e-healthcare. In 1999 Peter was made
a member of the National Electronic Records Taskforce. The
influential report of this taskforce is at www.health.gov.au/healthonline/.
This was accepted by State and Federal health ministers and
is now being implemented at a cost of $500 million over the
next 5-10 years. From 1995-2000 he was also the Chair of a
Queensland Telemedicine Network funded by Qld Health at cost
of about $3 million over 5 years. Peter has published extensively
in prestigious national and international journals with over
90 refereed journal articles. Most recently, he is the author
of a book which is titled Your guide to e-health – third
millennium medicine on the internet, published by the University
of Queensland Press. Peter’s reputation in the field
has also led to over 70 international invitations to give
keynote addresses.
