ACROSSnet
uses a participatory action research (PAR) methodology to
produce new knowledge and facilitate the management of positive
social change (Wadsworth 1998), through spiralling cycles
of planning, action, analysis and critical reflection (Rural
Women and ICT’s Project Team, 1999). The participative
approach, employed by the researchers in previous ARC-funded
projects in rural communities, proved an effective means of
facilitating knowledge-sharing between researchers, industry
partners and community members; raising awareness and disseminating
knowledge to the community; promoting community ownership
of the project; enhancing the value of user feedback; generating
data; and providing a framework for ongoing analysis and evaluation
of the research direction and outcomes.
We see PAR methodology as a critical element
in the success of this project, enabling interested stakeholders
to have an equal say as we collaboratively negotiate the complex
ethical, professional and technical issues inherent in the
research. ACROSSnet is managed by a steering committee that
includes university researchers, industry partner representatives,
rural community members and others with special needs, such
as individuals from seniors, indigenous and disability groups.
Rural members participate via audio conference to ensure the
research remains grounded in the needs, policies and objectives
of rural stakeholders.
Participation by and feedback from rural workers
and community members also plays an integral role in the development
of the online support system. Workshops and interviews being
conducted across the state serve multiple purposes, including
awareness-raising and training in the use of the online service;
creating local ‘champions’ to assist in dissemination
of information about the website, facilitating local cross-sectoral
networking; and providing feedback and input into the refinement
and evolution of the online system itself.
