Research Design

The research design consists of two integrated components, taking place concurrently throughout the life of the project.

  • Component 1 is the development and implementation of the online support model.
  • Component 2 employs the PAR methodology in the collection and analysis of data and the evaluation of the effectiveness and transferability of the model.

Component 1 has three levels. Level 1 targets all community members; Level 2 targets professional mental health workers and community professionals (such as police officers, church ministers, teachers or youth workers) who may deal with clients showing signs of suicidal intent; Level 3 targets professional mental health workers who require urgent case-specific advice from expert clinicians. Level 2 and 3 require appropriate levels of registration to ensure confidentiality and ethical delivery of information.

The ACROSSnet model builds on work by Yellowlees (2000) for the SharkNet project for Queensland teachers. It expands the levels and accessibility of the SharkNet online system to meet the needs of professional mental health workers and community professionals across a range of organisations and geographical locations; and communities in general who need access to credible, easily available information and support. The model is described in further detail below.
