Frequently Asked Questions
What is a suicide attempt? [Print this FAQ]

According to the World Health Organization, a suicide attempt is “a suicidal act with a non-fatal outcome”. Sometimes other terms are used interchangeably: “attempted suicide”, “act of deliberate self-harm”, “self-harm”, and “parasuicide”.

Many researchers and clinicians avoid the term “attempted suicide” as it has negative connotations suggesting that such act is a failed (unsuccessful) suicide.
