Frequently Asked Questions
How does Australian suicide rate compare with other countries? [Print this FAQ]

Australia’s rate of suicide is comparable to that of countries with similar social and political characteristics, i.e. Canada, United States, New Zealand and Ireland, which all report suicide rates between 10 and 15 per 100,000 population.

The highest suicide rates are reported among former USSR Republics (e.g., 44.7 per 100,000 in Lithuania in 2002) and the lowest in South European countries (e.g., 3.6 per 100,000 in Greece in 1999).
